FESYO Newsletter #2 – May 2005

Message to Friends

Time has flown by so quickly since we celebrated the 25th birthday of ESYO, the Christmas party and the tremendous performance of Mahler No1 (The Titan) at the beginning of the year. What a wonderful performance by ESYO players and what a fantastic applause given by the audience. The 25th anniversary programme of events proved a real success and we were delighted to see so many friends involved.

It has been a privilege to listen and enjoy such a high standard of music performed by the ESYO players which has only been possible by the hard work put in by the players, Colin Metters (their Conductor), the teachers and the tremendous support of the parents and friends.

The exciting trip to Poland last year by ESYO and the experience of playing in the beautiful church of Krakow with over 700 in the audience will give the players a tremendous appreciation of the home town of the Late Pope John Paul II.

This year looks as exciting as ever for ESYO and starts with a summer concert in the wonderful concert hall of LSO St Lukes in the Barbican London. This will take place on Friday 29 July 2005 followed by another superb concert at the White Rock Theatre in Hastings on Sunday 31 July 2005.

There will be a summer barbecue for everyone after the music workshop at the Performing Arts Centre in Lewes on Wednesday evening of 27 July 2005 at 5.30 pm. At the barbecue we will be saying farewell to a teacher who is stepping down after 26 years and showing him our appreciation for his dedicated service to the Orchestra. We will also be thanking two committee members, who are retiring after their maximum six years term.

Do invite all your friends and relatives as they are most welcome.

Best Wishes.
Mustak Damani
Chairman

Main highlights of the 2004/2005 Season to date:

22 December 2004

The informal concert and the Christmas party on Wednesday 22 December 2004 were a great success and raised over £1,000 including £750 presented by Battle Round Table. We would like to thank all the members of the Battle Round Table for their generous donations and the Vice Chairman of Battle Round Table, for all his help.

3 January 2005

The Town Hall at Eastbourne on Monday 3 January 2005 was packed full and the atmosphere was electric. The evening started by observing a standing 2 minutes silence to show our respect for all the people who had suffered in the Tsunami Disaster followed by an auction.

A Flying Lesson for two with Sussex Flying Club at Shoreham Club were auctioned and these were bought by a Friend.

Two VIP tickets for the London Eye were also auctioned at this concert and were bought by another Friend.

Both the above items were donated by Mustak Damani, the chairman of FESYO, and in total the auction raised £205. We would like give our many thanks to the Friends who bid in the auction.

As mentioned at the concert at Eastbourne Town Hall the chairman of FESYO donated £205 to the Tsunami Disaster Appeal Fund by matching the amount raised by the auction.

20 February to 17 April 2005

A number of Sunday afternoon chamber concerts were held at Westgate Chapel to enable students to perform and to raise funds. These were kindly organised by committee members, and were a great success with the support of the FESYO committee.

Further concerts are planned for September(see Future Events) to coincide with Lewes Artwave. These concerts will be lunch time recitals with a glass of wine included and will range from a string quartet to a small jazz band ensemble.
