East Sussex Youth Orchestra

East Sussex Youth Orchestra has performed in all the principal concerts venues of the county including Glyndebourne, and has also appeared in London at St John’s Smith square, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, LSO St Luke’s and the Royal Albert Hall. Since its formation the Orchestra has toured abroad from time to time, visiting France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland and Spain.

The county orchestra has also taken part twice in Edinburgh as part of the National Association of Youth Orchestra’s festival during the internationally renowned Edinburgh Festival.

In the year 2000 as well as in 2001, the orchestra was selected as one of the six national finalists, from which there was no further ranking, in the Sainsbury’s Youth Orchestra series for those years. In 2000, the orchestra embarked on a concert tour of Tuscany, in which exciting performances of two programmes were given to capacity audiences in principal towns and cities in this region of Italy.

In 2001 the orchestra gave two summer concerts with the celebrated pianist John Lill, in Wiltshire and East Sussex, and in the summer of 2002 the orchestra toured to Belgium where concerts were given at the historic town of Ypres and at the Cathedral in Ghent as part of the Ghent Festival.

In August 2003 the orchestra gave a concert at one of the most prestigious conservatoires in the world, the Royal College of Music in London.

As part of the twenty fifth anniversary celebrations in 2004, the Orchestra toured Poland giving concerts in major historic and cultural centres, finishing in Krakov. All concerts included a tremendous performance of Dvorak’s cello concerto with soloist Guy Johnston. The Orchestra also performed at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings and at LSO St Lukes concert hall in London, which was broadcast live via the internet.

In July 2006 the orchestra performed a charity concert for Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) to raise funds to help train their mainly volunteer crew. Please see an extract from "Bexhill Observer" dated 11 August 2006 and written by Marrion Wells.

In August 2006 the orchestra toured Spain, which culminated in a performance by invitation, at the highly acclaimed Pablo Casals International Festival.

More recently in January 2007 the Youth Orchestra has performed Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill in memory of Derek Norcross OBE,DL.
